Syria pullback starts on Monday

The redeployment of Syrian troops in Lebanon will start on Monday, the Lebanese defence minister has said.Syrian President Bashar al-Assad will meet his Lebanese counterpart on Monday to discuss the details. The pro-Syrian guerilla movement called for a “massive popular gathering” on Tuesday against a UN resolution demanding the withdrawal of foreign forces from Lebanon.

The outgoing minister, part of the pro-Syrian government that promised to step down last week after popular protest, said the redeployment would be complete after two to three days. The 1989 Taef accord, which ended the Lebanese civil war, calls for a phased withdrawal of Syrian troops, beginning with redeployment to the Bekaa Valley, while the 2004 UN resolution calls for foreign forces to leave Lebanon.Sheik Hassan Nasrallah, head of  Hezbollah, whose Hezbollah movement is backed by Syria and Iran, called on Lebanese groups “from all  of the confessions“ to protest outside the UN offices in Beirut.

He said the demonstration was meant to „denounce the UN resolution of the discord, to express gratitude and loyalty to Syria for its achievements in Lebanon and to demand the truth in the assassination of martyr former Prime minister Rafik Hariri.“Lebanese opposition groups have blamed Syria for the 14 February car bomb death of Mr Hariri, an opponent of Syrian interference in Lebanon.Mr Assad called the killing “ an atrocious crime….
